In 2024 CCL’s incisive take on sonic storytelling has sprawled across mixtapes, sets and releases, their craft bursts with excitement and is expressed via multiple formats, an approach which has caused enough intrigue to have already been documented in lengthy detail (Resident Advisor, Crack). Their ethos of playing, weaves together curious inspiration from a wildly oscillating range of genres and musical contexts, born partially from time spent in Berlin, Bristol, the DIY scene of Seattle and the American Midwest. CCL’s debut solo record, the Plot Twist EP, remains true to everything you’ve read or heard about their artistic approach, balancing production which immerses, intrigues and surprises. A record which connects fantastical, fanatical and referential sonorous elements; rambunctiously distilling them to create those moments of emotional outpouring when we’re all alone together, on the dancefloor.
‘’Plot Twist’’, moves itself along snappily with the downward momentum of a deep cosmic spiral, the quotidian words extracted from banality by the frothing FM Phase ‘’We’re standing in the library…sometimes when I’m reading things it feels like I’m dreaming’’ says a chilled, soft and seductively inviting voice. CCL creates a wonderfully warm and fluid moment with a combined electric guitar riffing, dubstep and 2-step creation, an active and finely balanced wormhole preserved by a reverberating fierce energy.
The cryptic ASMR murder mystery then folds back in on itself with ‘’The Plot Thickens’’, with D Tiffany adding flour to the sauce, CCL’s voice stirs, ‘’She’s wandering through the library, picks up a book from the shelf, turns the pages softly, It’s called dreams the original thrill’’, mischievous, with a dark opulence, bolting through the dusty library stacks. We’re viewing the ‘’Plot Twist’’ from the perspective of a different character, 3rd person and out of body, the interior monologue of a memory being retold. CCL concocts a level of being situated between stygian dark and fairy like weightlessness, an absurd drop with devilish glitches, turning the fuzzy meter up to ten minutes past your bedtime.
‘’Strange Attractor’’ dips its toes into the warm waters of 160bpm psychedelia, the salty ocean lapping at its bare feet. Stepping back from the cosmic arch, this paw walks its own odyssey, slipping between registers of euphoria and trepidation. With a cycling arrangement of rousing vocals, flickering arps and celestial chords, and masterfully dialed in sonic detailing, ‘’Strange attractor’’ envelops the dancer, embracing them tightly while a constant stream of rolling trepidation sweeps through the dance.
Piezo’s tense, chugging, darkwave and Andrew Weatherall inspired remix of ‘’The Plot Thickens’’ drives the original to a subterranean breaking point, cracking a basement window just enough to let the light in.
The Plot Twist EP taps at those mental terrains where sensual activity can provide enough stimuli for the listeners and dancers bodies and imaginations to melt and extend.
